I would like to tell you a story…
Once upon a time, a little over two years ago, I was trying to decide what to make a loved one for their birthday. After the usual umming and ahhing, I settled on creating a series of bedtime stories based on his life. At first, it was just going to be a small, simple gift, these short stories printed out. But like most things in life, it didn’t quite go to plan. In fact, the idea grew somewhat out of control into quite possibly the best gift I have ever made for anyone.
With the help of my darling friend and wonderful illustrator Maria, we slowly and secretly created the very first book of ‘The Adventures of Bambu the Busy Body Bear’. The stories, 33 in total, were handwritten into a leather bound scrap book, filled with sketches, drawings and paintings from Maria and embellished with stickers and tissue paper (which is legitimately the limit of my artistic skills) to the extent that the final product no longer fit in the beautiful box the book had arrived in.
Whilst we worked away, we started to toy with the idea of making these stories not just for our dear real life Bambu but for everyone…would that be possible? Are we losing our minds? We could hardly wait to bounce the ideas of our friends with little ones once the secret was out (and boy did it feel good to get the secret out!) and we had some lovely feedback.
That was it really. We didn’t need any more encouragement than that. We got to work straight away and a year after we revealed the surprise birthday gift, we released the first of our series ‘The Surprise’.
For us, it has been such a wonderful journey, taking what was supposed to be a small present to being the start of our publishing adventure. We are so thankful to everyone who has supported us, bought our first book and encouraged us to follow our dreams and of course, to our real life Bambu, without whose life we have plagiarised, none of this would be possible.
